Q: Who are Blackheath Wanderers?
A: Blackheath Wanderers Sports Club has been going since 1886 (the first year of Wimbledon, too!). We've been playing tennis in our current sports ground, located just behind Riverston School in Eltham Road since the 1940s. We participate in local tennis leagues for men, women and mixed doubles, but we are mostly a very friendly, social doubles club, with players from 10-to-70-something.
Q: What is the standard of play?
A: We have a few outstanding players at Blackheath Wanderers, but we always welcome beginners and occasional players to the club. It's lower pressure than many clubs. We like to mix and match a range of players so that the advanced ones can concentrate on certain aspects of their game, and novices can improve - and they do here, year in and year out.
Q: Who's in charge?
A: Don Fisher is our the sports club president, tennis club chairman, all round master of tennis ceremonies, and a great doubles partner for new and experienced players alike.
Q: Do you offer coaching?
A: Not officially - not at the moment. Some of our best players do offer great tips and set great examples as partners. We have some children and young teens who are very promising players. Some take outside tuition and then come and play doubles with the adults or amongst themselves.
Q: Can I 'try out' the club?
A: Yes, by all means, drop by on a Thursday evening or a Sunday afternoon from May to October and have a knock, a game or a match with the members for no charge. If you liek what you see/play/hit - join us!
Q: Is there a dress code on court?
A: Wimbledon whites are optional, however, we have a reasonable expectation that members wear proper tennis attire and shoes.
